PETERBOROUGH-The Peterborough Police Service is issuing a notice for public safety after the release of a Peterborough man.
20yr-old Austin DeMaeyer of Selwyn Township was sentenced and released today in connection with an incident on a Peterborough trail in June 2022
As part of his sentence, he was placed on a three-year probation order for failing to comply with a previous probation order to not possess any weapons. DeMaeyer has been in custody since his arrest in June 2022.
Given the nature of the crimes, which includes a history of targeting women, police say they have chosen to release his name and photo. This release is being made in accordance with the provisions of the Ontario Police Service Act
On June 22, 2022, officers with Street Crime Unit spotted the accused by himself and followed him to a trail in the area of Nassau Mills Road and Armour Road. Officers located the accused just off the trail in the bushes with a compound bow and arrows where he was taken into custody without incident.
He was charged and convicted of Possession of a Weapon for Dangerous Purpose, Possession of a Firearm or Ammunition contrary to Prohibition Order and Fail to Comply with Probation Order.
At the time of his charges he was already bound by a lifetime weapons prohibition and a probation order to not attend any campground, park, trails, or hiking areas except accompanied by an adult.
