Canadian Mental Health Association Kicks Off Garden Homes Pilot Project With $16,800 Ski-Relay Donation

KAWARTHA LAKES-The Canadian Mental Health Association Haliburton, Kawartha, Pine Ridge (CMHA HKPR) Garden Homes project aims to support vulnerable individuals who are at risk of homelessness in the Peterborough area by providing affordable, small homes.

Through the pilot project, CMHA HKPR will be creating small, custom-built housing for individuals or small families within Peterborough. The homes will be permanent structures of approximately 500 square feet, each with their own kitchen, bathroom washer and dryer.

This project is one of the first of its kind in the region and officials hope to pave the way for similar projects and more affordable housing in the future.

“We are incredibly grateful for the support of event organizer John Hauser, Wild Rock Outfitters, Kawartha Nordic, and Ashburnham Ale House. The funds raised through the Ski-Relay will go a long way in helping us launch the Garden Homes Project. Thanks to this fundraiser, we have now reached our fundraising target and are able to purchase the first Garden Home,” says Mark Graham, Chief Executive Officer, CMHA HKPR.

The project got a boost recently from the Ski-Relay hosted by Wild Rock Outfitters, Kawartha Nordic, and Ashburnham Ale House raised $16,800 for our Garden Homes Project. Officials say the United Way and Peterborough Realtors Care have also made donations.

The Ski-Relay, which took place on January 22nd at Kawartha Nordic Ski Club in North Kawartha, included 11 teams and 40 skiers and donors.

The funds from the Ski-Relay will support CMHA HKPR’s Garden Homes Project through the Supportive Housing program.

“We would also like to thank all who participated in the event and those who donated, especially event sponsors and top fundraisers Cambium and Dynacast Peterborough,” says Graham.

“I believe the success of this fundraiser shows how much the people of Peterborough care about the issue of homelessness in our City, I’m so pleased” says John Hauser, event organizer.
