Education Worker Strike Averted As CUPE And Government Reach Tentative Agreement

KAWARTHA LAKES-Kids will be in their classrooms tomorrow after a tentative deal was reached between CUPE education workers and the Ontario Government.

55,000 custodians, Educational Assistants, Early Childhood Education staff and more had been set to walk off the job on Monday if a deal couldn’t be reached by 5pm today.

“I’m proud to confirm the parties have come together to reach a tentative agreement to keep kids in school.” said Stephen Lecce, Minister of Education. “This is a positive outcome and we are grateful to all the parties in working with the government.”

Lecce would not p[provide details on the agreement until it is ratified CUPE members who still have to vote on the deal.

“All parties leave this tentative agreement with positive outcomes, all parties have been able to receive incremental wins. But the biggest winner is the kids and they are going to be in class, they are going to be learning in class tomorrow.”
