Big Chute Marine Railway Closed Until Further Notice

KAWARTHA LAKES-Boaters planning on using the Big Chute Marine Railway in Coldwater to tour the Trent Severn Waterway are out of luck, for now.

Parks Canada says the Big Chute Marine Railway has experienced a hydraulic pump failure, resulting in a closure of the site until further notice.

An update on the status of the site and the repair of the pump will be provided on Monday.

“We regret any inconvenience that this situation may cause our visitors and stakeholders. Thank you for your patience and understanding.” said the TSW on Facebook.

Lock 44 has had staff shortages this summer resulting in a lack of operators with the necessary training to lock through larger vessels. Parks Canada had to put in place temporary and periodic restrictions based on vessel size or hull configuration. officials said vessels with beams greater than 11.5’ and that are required to “hang” off the back of the cart or with unique hull configurations require the oversight of experienced staff, and these vessels would face delays when experienced staff are on days of rest or away from the site.

Now the site is closed until further notice.
