PETERBOROUGH-Environment Canada has issued a Severe Thunderstorm Watch for parts of our region.
Severe thunderstorm watch in effect for:
- Apsley – Woodview – Northern Peterborough County
- Haliburton – Minden – Southern Haliburton County
- Bancroft – Hastings Highlands – Denbigh
- Kaladar – Bannockburn – Bon Echo Park
Conditions are favourable for the development of severe thunderstorms that may be capable of producing large hail and heavy rain.
Isolated thunderstorms have developed over southwestern Haliburton and Northern Peterborough County. These thunderstorms have the potential of becoming severe late this evening and overnight. The main threats with these thunderstorms are nickel sized hail and locally heavy downpours. The thunderstorms are moving east at 50 km/h.
Large hail can damage property and cause injury. Heavy downpours can cause flash floods and water pooling on roads. Lightning kills and injures Canadians every year. Remember, when thunder roars, go indoors!
Severe thunderstorm watches are issued when atmospheric conditions are favourable for the development of thunderstorms that could produce one or more of the following: large hail, damaging winds, torrential rainfall.
The Office of the Fire Marshal and Emergency Management recommends that you take cover immediately if threatening weather approaches.
