Severe Thunderstorm Watch Issued For Kawartha Lakes And Peterborough

KAWARTHA LAKES-Environment Canada has issued a Severe Thunderstorm Watch for Peterborough and Kawartha Lakes.

Severe thunderstorm watch in effect for:

  • Apsley – Woodview – Northern Peterborough County
  • Fenelon Falls – Balsam Lake Park – Northern Kawartha Lakes
  • Lindsay – Southern Kawartha Lakes
  • Peterborough City – Lakefield – Southern Peterborough County

Conditions are favourable for the development of severe thunderstorms that may be capable of producing strong wind gusts and large hail with wind gusts of 90 to 110 km/h
Nickel to ping pong ball size hail this afternoon and early this evening.

Thunderstorms are expected to develop early this afternoon with the potential for quick intensification as they progress eastward. While a tornado or two cannot be completely ruled out, damaging winds and hail will be the primary threats.

Large hail can damage property and cause injury. Strong wind gusts can toss loose objects, damage weak buildings, break branches off trees and overturn large vehicles. Lightning kills and injures Canadians every year. Remember, when thunder roars, go indoors!
