PETERBOROUGH-It’s the highlight of the summer for kids from far and wide. A chug-a-lug around the train tracks, screaming as you go through the tunnel at the Riverview Park and Zoo in Peterborough.
The train has been shut down for two summers due to COVID-19 restrictions but this summer staff are working hard to reopen all of the amenities, including the train.
On Friday they suffered a setback.
“Unfortunately, vandals have broken into the train tunnel, damaged our venerable train locomotive and stolen its signature brass bell. In addition to the cost of repair/replacement, thoughtless acts like this really have a negative impact on our team of dedicated and passionate staff.” said staff on Facebook.
The train was purchased in 1974 and about 2 million visitors have ridden the train over the years.
Anyone with information is asked to call Peterborough Police at 705-876-1122 x555 or Crime Stoppers at 1-800-222-8477 or online at
