KAWARTHA LAKES-Dunsford’s Jon Thurston has won a bronze medal at the Paralympics in Beijing.
Thurston is part of the wheelchair curling team and threw the final rock for the win. Thurston grew up in Dunsford. In 2008 he was paralyzed from the waist down after a construction accident in Lindsay. He was part of a crew working on a facility on St. David Street in Lindsay when the building collapsed after a storm had blown through the area. That’s not the only adversity Thurston has had to overcome to make it to the Olympics.

Thurston was named to the Canadian Paralympic Curling Team in January.
“It’s a dream come true to be a Paralympian! It’s been years of hard work and I’m very honoured and excited to get the opportunity to represent Canada.” Thurston told Kawartha 411 News at the time.
This was Thurston’s first time competing in the Olympics but he was already an accomplished curler having represented Canada in three recent world championships, often throwing the critical last rocks for the Canadians.
Rounding out the team is Ina Forrest, Dennis Thiessen, Collinda Joseph, Mark Ideson and Coach Mick Lizmore.
Congratulations to all!
