KAWARTHA LAKES-Kawartha 411 news has learned the Ultramar gas station on County Road 36 in Dunsford has been temporarily closed after an “issue” with the fuel.
Cliff Ringuette says his vehicle was damaged after topping up on Monday night.
“I grabbed gas at the station on Monday evening (Family Day) around 6 pm, about 2-3 minutes down the road the van starts to act funny and breaks down just near my house. It started to sputter, decreased speed and the engine light started to flash. Then it just died.” Cliff told Kawartha 411 News. “I had to have it towed to Williamson Chrysler the next morning. Luckily we have CAA.”
Ringuette says he had a suspicion that it was the gas and this morning Williamson Chrysler confirmed it.
“Chrylser called me back this morning and told me it was bad gas. I am sure many customers have been affected. I have to send proof of expenses/receipts related to the issue to Ultramar.”
The company website says the gas station is “temporarily closed”.
Kawartha 411 News called Ultramar Customer Service this morning and was told “something is off with the fuel” and that clients should keep receipts for damages.
Ringuette says the dealer told him there was water in the gas.
“Could have been much worse. The problem is they don’t know if it will have any long term effects on the vehicle.”
We have contacted Parkland, Ultramar’s parent company media relations for comment. They said they were working on a response but did not provide one after repeated requests.
Ringuette says he recently moved to Dunsford and has been using the gas station ever since because it is close by.
“I will never again use Ultramar. Hopefully no issues with Ultramar reimbursing us for the repairs.”
In February 2020 Global News reported a similar incident after drivers in Montreal reported they were facing expensive car repairs after they allegedly unknowingly filled up with gas contaminated with water at an Ultramar station in the area.
In January 2018 motorists thought they were filling their tanks with regular unleaded gasoline at an Ultramar station located just off Highway 401 in Prescott, Instead, they unknowingly put diesel fuel into their tanks according to Global News.
“This was a third party that delivered the gas who unfortunately made that mistake,” explained Ultramar spokesperson Pierre Tessier told Global at the time. If your vehicle was impacted by the issue in Dunsford call Ultramar at 1-800-363-6949 to file a complaint.
