KAWARTHA LAKES-The SIU is investigating the circumstances surrounding the death of a man after an officer with the City of Kawartha Lakes OPP discharged his firearm near a residence on Devitts Road at approximately 10am.
Multiple OPP units were on the scene of an incident on Devitts Road near Bobcaygeon. The tactical unit and a negotiator were also called in along with an ambulance.
Police say officers attended a residence for a theft investigation. The SIU says the man had a firearm. There was an interaction and an officer discharged his firearm before retreating.
Additional officers arrived on scene and located the man. Paramedics pronounced him deceased at the scene.
The SIU has invoked its mandate Three investigators and two forensic investigators have been assigned to the case. One subject officer and three witness officials have been designated at this time.
Police say there is no concern for public safety.
