UPDATE: The motion passed and emergency powers will remain in place until March 28,2022.
KAWARTHA LAKES-Independent MPP for York Centre Roman Baber says the Ford government is attempting to extend its emergency powers well into 2022 and without a vote in parliament.
Baber took to Twitter saying “With a simple motion, @fordnation will extend his power to impose lockdowns/measures without debate or vote in parliament. Emergency orders without a State of Emergency is an assault on democracy”.
It’s part of a government notice of motions Number 8. It says:
“Whereas certain orders made pursuant to section 2 of the Emergency Management and Civil Protection Act were continued pursuant to section 2 of the Reopening Ontario Act. Whereas the Premier has recommended that the powers to amend and extend the orders be extended further to the end of the day on March 28, 2022. Therefore, the powers to amend and extend the orders referred to in subsection 8(1) of the act are extended until the end of the day on March 28,2022.”
The motion was brought forward by MPP Sylvia Jones of Dufferin-Caledon on Monday. It appears some debate is happening today. It’s unclear if there will be a vote.
Meanwhile 86% of all eligible Ontarians are fully vaccinated. (two doses)
