Special Investigations Unit Probing Circumstances After Man Suffers Critical Injuries, Taser Deployed On Hwy 115

UPDATE: The man has succumbed to his injuries.

KAWARTHA LAKES-The province’s Special Investigations Unit is investigating the circumstances surrounding the critical injuries suffered by a man following a single vehicle collision and police deployment of a conducted energy weapon (CEW) this afternoon.

The SIU say preliminary information suggests the following:
  • At approximately 12 noon on October 2, 2021, there was a single vehicle collision on Highway 115.
  • There was an interaction with the man involved in the collision and the Durham Regional Police Service.  Police deployed a CEW at the man.
  • The man is in hospital in critical condition.
The SIU is urging anyone who may have information about this investigation to contact the lead investigator at 1-800-787-8529. The Unit is also urging anyone who may have any video evidence related to this incident to upload that video through the SIU website.

The SIU is an independent government agency that investigates the conduct of officials (police officers as well as special constables with the Niagara Parks Commission and peace officers with the Legislative Protective Service) that may have resulted in death, serious injury, sexual assault and/or the discharge of a firearm at a person.
