Peterborough Man Charged In Connection With Hotel Fire Sunday Morning

PETERBOROUGH-A 31-year-old Peterborough man is facing charges in connection with a fire at a hotel early Sunday morning.

Police say at approximately 3:30am on May 2, 2021, an officer on patrol noticed smoke coming out of a ground floor room of the hotel on Lansdowne Street West.  During the investigation officers learned a man was allegedly spotted on video leaving the room through the outside door and fleeing the scene.  A short time later another officer on patrol spotted a man walking in the area of Lansdowne Street and The Parkway that matched the description police had from the hotel.

As a result of the investigation, 31-year-old Robert Smith of Peterborough was arrested and charged with:

  • Arson – Disregard for Human Life
  • Fail to Comply with Probation

The accused was held in custody and appeared in court on May 2, 2021 at which time he was remanded into custody and will appear in court on May 5, 2021.

Peterborough Police Service and the Ontario Fire Marshall are continuing to investigate.
