KAWARTHA LAKES-A 32-year-old Peterborough man is facing a number of charges after an incident Monday night.
The accused was wanted on a warrant for robbery with violence, assault, and failure to comply with a release order according to police.
Police say at approximately, 10:00 pm on February 8, 2021, an officer on patrol spotted the accused’s vehicle in the Charlotte Street and Stewart Street area. The officer followed the vehicle activating the emergency lights, however, the car failed to stop until it was blocked in by two other police car according to police while officer attempted to approach the vehicle and it started driving toward the officer, forcing them to jump out of the way.
The pursuit continued to Queen Elizabeth School at which time the driver hit a fence, exited the vehicle, and fled. Officers gave chase on foot along with K9 Isaac. While searching, police received a call from a nearby resident advising police of an unknown man in their backyard. Officers and K9 attended the area and located the accused in a backyard shed several homes away.
The accused ignored calls to show his hands and K9 Isaac was deployed and gained control of the suspect with a controlled bite to the accused’s upper arm.
As a result of the incident, 32-year-old Dallas Costain of Peterborough was charged with:
- Flight from a police officer
- Dangerous operation of a vehicle
- Trespassing at Night
- Mischief under $5000
- Failure to comply with a release order
- Careless driving
- Driving while under suspension
- Failing to stop at a stop sign
- Speeding
- Driving a motor vehicle without a validation on the plate
During the arrest, officers found drugs and drug paraphernalia on the accused and he was further charged with:
- Possession of a Schedule I substance for the purpose of trafficking – cocaine
- Possession of a Schedule I substance for the purpose of trafficking – fentanyl
The accused was treated for the dog bite at Peterborough Regional Health Centre and released. The officer was not injured.
The accused was held in custody and will appear in court on February 9, 2021.
