Local Theatre Company Off To Promising Start To 2021 Despite The Pandemic

KAWARTHA LAKES-Some good news for Globus Theatre in Bobcaygeon after a challenging year. A major new season sponsor has signed on and they’ve reached a fund-raising goal.

The theatres Save Our Stage (SOS) matching funds campaign reached the goal of $100,000 and officials would like to thank everyone who supported the theatre during a bleak and challenging year.

The Save Our Stage fundraising campaign began in June of 2020 after Globus’ 17th season of professional summer theatre had to be cancelled. Globus Theatre’s Artistic Producer, James Barrett, called John and Sally Eaton – two of Globus’ regular patrons. When asked if their foundation, The John C. and Sally Horsfall Eaton Foundation, would consider being a matching funds partner in the SOS fundraising campaign they said, “Thank you – Thank you for feeling that you could ask us for help”.  After asking a lot of questions about finances and operations they pledged to match whatever Globus raised up to $100,000. And now they have!

This has allowed Globus Theatre to get through 2020 with the creative and administrative team intact. It also allowed Globus to open summer camps for kids and produce two small seasons of live programming in Aug/Sept and Nov/Dec. Ten shows over twenty nights were produced keeping staff and artists working and a small but appreciative group of patrons entertained.

“When we had to cancel our 2020 season and face the reality that the future of live theatre had changed drastically, we knew that it was going to be a monumental task to stay afloat. The bleak financial landscape and the precarious ‘hope for the best, plan for the worst’ scenarios were horribly reminiscent of getting the theatre off the ground 17 years ago. We didn’t know if we had it in us to battle through, but then we remembered that this time we weren’t doing it alone! We had regular patrons, an awesome team, supportive local businesses, and a company of determined performers – we could do this! Thanks to John and Sally and a whole host of other supporters we made it!  We are under no illusions that the battle is over, we know it is a tough road ahead of us and fundraising is now part of the ongoing reality BUT now Globus Theatre has a future and, knowing that, makes us feel like we can do anything! Stay tuned for our 2021 season announcement!”  said Sarah Quick, Globus Theatre Artistic Director

On the heels of that news came word of a season sponsor.

The theatre announced British Empire Fuels as their 2021 Season Sponsor. British Empire Fuels is a local, family owned and operated business and long-time supporter of Globus Theatre. With over 70 years of experience, British Empire Fuels is the trusted name in fuel delivery in Kawartha Lakes and Trent Lakes. This substantial step for the company to become the Season Sponsor is encouraging and inspiring.

James Barrett, Globus Theatre Artistic Producer said  “To see this level of support from British Empire Fuels is wonderful – it shows that they recognize the Arts as a vital and vibrant part of our community. Like us, they are committed to ensuring a bright future for the residents of Kawartha Lakes and visitors to our region.  In this partnership we can work together to make Globus Theatre, The Lakeview Arts Barn and Bobcaygeon a cultural hub.”

Sheila WhyteV.P. Office and Marketing at British Empire Fuels says, We have supported Globus Theatre for many years and are happy to become the season sponsor because we know how important it is having this theatre in our community and this year more than ever.  We are all hoping to be able to enjoy the great performances of 2021, with the least restrictions possible.  We felt this was the most opportune time to take on the season sponsorship and no matter what happens, the show must go on.  Cheers to a great season!

This Season Sponsorship will aid us in creating an exciting season for our patrons.  We look forward to this partnership with British Empire Fuels throughout 2021 and beyond.

The 2021 Summer Season will be announced as soon as Globus Theatre is able to coordinate production plans with COVID-19 guidelines in our region. If you would like to reserve your spot in our 2021 summer audience, you can purchase season subscription vouchers or gift certificates! Call the box office at 705-738-2037.
