UPDATE: As of Sunday morning the fire is classified as “under control” but it is not out.
KAWARTHA LAKES-Crews with the Ministry of Natural Resources and Forestry are battling a forest fire north of Norland.
The fire is located on the Northwest shore of West Moore’s Lake. As of Saturday morning the Ministry says the fire is classified as “being held” and is still one hectare in size. It was discovered yesterday at approximately 4pm. One crew was flown in by helicopter to battle the blaze. The Ministry says no water bombers have been used at this time.
There was also a second forest fire burning on Sugar Island on Gull Lake but it has since been extinguished.
In total, there are twenty-one active fires across the Northeast Region. Three fires are being held, twelve are under control and one is being observed. As of July 10th, there are five fires that are not yet under control.
Ministry officials say the fire hazard varies from low to moderate for most areas west of Espanola and north of Timmins due to recent precipitation on Friday, while areas south of Timmins and east of Espanola are maintaining a high to extreme hazard. A few pockets within the Cochrane sector are also presenting a high forest fire hazard.
There is currently a total fire ban in the City of Kawartha Lakes.
