SIU investigating after woman falls from roof at Peterborough Regional Health Centre

KAWARTHA LAKES-The province’s Special Investigations Unit (SIU)is investigating the circumstances surrounding the injury sustained by a 28-year-old woman yesterday in Peterborough when she fell from the roof of the ambulance garage at Peterborough Regional Health Centre.

The SIU says preliminary investigation shows at approximately 11:45 a.m. on February 4, 2020, Peterborough Police Service (PPS) officers were dispatched to the Hunter Street bridge after receiving a call about a woman in distress standing on the bridge.
Officers transported the woman to hospital. At approximately 2 p.m., PPS was notified that a woman was on the roof of the Peterborough Regional Health Centre ambulance garage. Officers were dispatched and attempted to communicate with the woman, who was allegedly identified as the individual on the bridge earlier that day.
Shortly after, the woman fell from the roof to the ground below and was taken to hospital for treatment of a serious injury.
At this time, two investigators and one forensic investigator have been assigned to the case.
The SIU is urging anyone who may have information about this investigation to contact the lead investigator at 1-800-787-8529. The Unit is also urging anyone who may have any video evidence related to this incident to upload that video through the SIU website.

The SIU is an arm’s length agency that investigates reports involving police where there has been death, serious injury or allegations of sexual assault. Under the Police Services Act, the Director of the SIU must

  • consider whether an officer has committed a criminal offence  in connection with the incident under investigation
  • depending on the evidence, lay a criminal charge against the officer if appropriate or close the file without any charges being laid
  • report the results of any investigations to the Attorney General.
