Kawartha Lakes Police say their phone number appearing in scam “call display”

KAWARTHA LAKES-The City of Kawartha Lakes Police Service is warning residents after reports the police services number has been programmed by scammers to appear in the call display.

“Local residents have reported seeing “Kawartha Lakes Police Service appear in their call display when fraudsters call.” Sgt. Dave Murtha tweeted on Monday. “Don’t fall for this fraud tactic.”

The OPP says they are having the same issue. “If you receive a call like this, hang up. Never provide personal information including ID numbers, passwords or financial info.”

Over 100,000 people were victims of fraud in Canada in 2018. While scammers prey on the elderly police say everyone is at risk. Some of the calls threaten arrest. This is a scam! Hang-up!
