Battle of the Blades star competing for funds to aid local Humane Society

KAWARTHA LAKES-The Humane Society of Kawartha Lakes (HSKL)has a figure skating star  championing their cause.

Violetta Afanasieva will take part in the 5th season of CBC’s Battle of the Blades, where athletes from two of Canada’s favourite sports — figure skating and hockey — pair up and perform in a live, high-stakes figure skating competition for the charity of their choice.

Afanasieva will be competing to help raise much needed awareness and funds for the Humane Society of Kawartha Lakes. Her partner, NHLer PJ Stock will be skating for ALS, in memory of his brother Dean.

This is the second time animal-lover Afanasieva has chosen HSKL as her charity of choice. In 2013, Afanasieva and her partner Jason Strudwick, came in second and helped bring in needed funds to their charities of choice.

Afanasieva competed nationally before retiring from amateur skating at the age of 10 to skate professionally alongside her parents in the Moscow Circus on Ice, where she debuted her legendary hulahoops act at the age of 13.

Participating in skating tours all over the world, she met her husband and current partner, Pete Dack, from Peterborough ON.

From September 26 – October 31, the Battle Of The Blades episodes will air on Thursdays at 8 p.m. (9 AT, 9:30 NT).

Voting begins at 9 p.m. ET each week at cbc.ca/battleoftheblades and remains open until 12 p.m. ET the following Tuesday. People can vote one time per 24-hour period.
