Police investigating knifepoint robbery at Newcastle grocery store

DURHAM-Durham Regional Police are looking for an armed suspect after a robbery at a grocery store in Newcastle overnight.

Police say on Monday, August 12, 2019, at approximately 10:25 p.m., members of East Division were dispatched to a robbery call at the Foodland Grocery Store on King Avenue East in Newcastle.

The masked suspect entered the front doors allegedly armed with a large knife, made a demand for cash and fled with the cash drawer.

Police checked the area but were unsuccessful. The store employees were not physically harmed during the incident.

The suspect is described as: white, small hands, 5’2 to 5’4” tall, with a small build. The suspect was dressed in all black clothes and black shoes. The suspect was armed with a large knife and wore a mask concealing their identity.

 Anyone with new information about this investigation is asked to contact Major Crime – Robbery Unit at 1-888-579-1520 ext. 5355. Anonymous tips can be made to Crime Stoppers at 1-800-222-8477 (TIPS) or on the website at www.durhamregionalcrimestoppers.ca and tipsters are eligible for a cash reward of up to $2,000.
