Local stores and churches partner with police to protect vulnerable seniors

KAWARTHA LAKES-Some local stores and churches have partnered with Kawartha Lakes Police Service to protect vulnerable seniors.

Beginning today participants will hand out information sheets to help protect seniors and vulnerable adults from falling victim to gift card scams.

The letters include information on the “gift card scam” and how it works. The  scam involves someone emailing or calling the victim and instilling a sense of urgency or panic to provide a payment by purchasing gift cards. The victim is then told to inform the caller of the gift card number as well as the PIN, giving the fraudster immediate access to the card.

It also provides information on what to do if you may have been a victim. Options include calling Kawartha Lakes Police Service at 705-324-5252 or the Canadian Anti-Fraud Centre toll free at 1-800-495-8501.
