KAWARTHA LAKES-Two separate stops of vessels being operated on waterways within the City of Kawartha Lakes resulted in the operator being charged.
Police say on July 9, 2019 a marine operator from the City of Kawartha Lakes OPP was on patrol on Sturgeon Lake, conducting vessel safety checks.
One check resulted in the vessel operator, Joshua Thomas, 27 years of age, of Hampton, being charged with having care or control of a vessel with cannabis readily available, contrary to the Cannabis Control Act. The officer seized 4 grams of cannabis according to police.
On the same date, the marine unit approached a vessel on Scugog River and allegedly observed the presence of empty beer cans. As a result of the ensuing investigation, David Chong, 60 years of age, of Durham, was charged with having care and control of a boat underway with open container of liquor, contrary to the Liquor Licence Act.
The OPP is reminding those operating boats that impaired boating is the same as impaired driving and carries with it the same penalties. Boat safe, boat sober.
