Second person charged after spike in drug overdoses in Lindsay

KAWARTHA LAKES-Investigators from the City of Kawartha Lakes Police Service, Drug Enforcement Unit arrested 35-year-old Jonathan Lawrence Haight of Lindsay on Wednesday. Haight had been wanted following a drug investigation that took place on May 28, 2019.

The accused was charged with two counts of possession of a controlled substance for the purpose of trafficking and one count of possession of a prohibited weapon.

“Purple Heroin,” which is a mixture of the controlled substances heroin and Fentanyl, has been responsible for a spike in drug overdoses in the City of Kawartha Lakes according to police. Fentanyl is an opioid based pain killer and when used alone, or added to other street drugs such as cocaine, cannabis and heroin, has a higher risk of causing a fatal overdose.

In Lindsay there were  five overdoses from a combination of heroin mixed with Fentanyl were reported to the City of Kawartha Lakes Police Service in one recent weekend.  In response to this ongoing threat to the safety of the community, members of the City of Kawartha Lakes Police Service Drug Enforcement Unit conducted an investigation into the sale of purple heroine from an address on William Street north in Lindsay.

On Tuesday May 28, 2019, just after 1:00pm a search warrant was executed at the home.  Police say a quantity of purple heroine and cocaine was located, in addition to a prohibited weapon.

40-year-old Jennifer Steer of Lindsay was arrested and charged at the time with two counts of possession of a controlled substance for the purpose of trafficking and one count of possession of a prohibited weapon.
