UPDATE- One person found dead-Fire Marshall called in to investigate blaze near Kirkfield

UPDATE: The Fire Marshall confirms one person found dead in the fire. An autopsy is being done today to confirm the identity.

KAWARTHA LAKES-At least three members of the Ontario Fire Marshall’s Office are at the scene of a blaze on Balsam Lake Drive near Kirkfield.

Crews were called in on Sunday night to a fire in the garage of the home. The fire spread to a large tree nearby but seems to have been otherwise contained by firefighters.

Police say emergency services personnel, including officers from the City of Kawartha Lakes OPP responded Sunday April 28, 2019 at approximately 10:15pm to a garage fire at a Kirkfield area residence.

Upon police arrival the structure was fully engulfed in flames. Through investigation it was determined that a person was unaccounted for.

With the assistance of the OPP’s Canine Unit and the Office of the Ontario Fire Marshal human remains were discovered on April 29, 2019 at the scene. The remains have been sent to the Center of Forensic Sciences for a post mortem examination. The investigation is continuing.

Meanwhile one of the residents of the home was reported missing on Sunday. 65 year-old male, Bernie Babin was last seen on Balsam Lake Dr. on April 28, 2019.

His family says he has been found deceased. Police have not confirmed that.
