New 30,000 square foot “community garden” in Lindsay opens in June

KAWARTHA LAKES-An innovative new food security venture in Lindsay will launch on June 8th with a Garden Party Fundraiser.

United Way CKL will host the fundraiser to celebrate the grand opening of Edwin Binney’s Community Garden on Crayola Canada’s Property. The garden is on a 30,000 square foot piece of land adjacent to the Crayola building.

The event will take place at both Fleming College’s Auks Lodge and the brand new Edwin Binney’s Community Garden (weather permitting).

Edwin Binney and his cousin C. Harold Smith founded Crayola, orinigally called Binney and Smith. They took over Edwin’s father’s pigment business in 1885.  Early products included red oxide pigment used as barn paint and carbon black used in car tires.

After noticing a need for safe, high quality, affordable wax crayons, in 1903, Crayola produced the first box of eight crayons and sold them for 5 cents. Crayola crayons first rolled off the assembly line in 1903.

Since then, the Crayola brand has grown into a portfolio of innovative art tools, crafting activities, and creative toys that give kids the power to express all that inspires them as they explore, discover, play, pretend, and dream.

Guests are invited to attend the cocktail and speeches portion of the event at Fleming College’s Auks Lodge from 1pm until 3pm, where special guests from Crayola Canada, Fleming College and United Way for the City of Kawartha Lakes will speak about the creation of the garden After speeches, guests will be invited to peruse the community tables, purchase Edwin Binney’s Community Garden merchandise, indulge in hors d’oeuvres and enjoy the cash bar. Just a quick walk down the block will land guests at Edwin Binney’s Community Garden for the ribbon cutting portion of the event.

There will also be the grand unveiling of the Days Inn and Suites Bee Hotel and the Mural created through the Youth Mural Competition. Prizes for the Mural Competition will be awarded, then attendees will be invited to explore the gardens at their leisure.
