Missing hikers found by OPP

KAWARTHA LAKES-A happy ending for some lost hikers at Kawartha Highlands Provincial Park.

Members of the Peterborough County OPP were called this morning at 4:00am to assist in locating three missing hikers. Two males and one female attended Kawartha Highlands Provincial Park in Trent Lakes yesterday evening. A family member contacted police this morning and reported that they were concerned for the hiker’s safety as they had not returned home.

After a brief search, members of the Peterborough County OPP with assistance from the Central Region Canine Unit and Central Region Emergency Response Team (ERT) located the hikers north of Buckhorn. The hikers were wet and cold but uninjured.

The Peterborough County OPP would like to offer hikers the following tips:

  • Hike in a group
  • Consume small snacks and water throughout the hike
  • Carry a map and compass
  • Study a map and trail guide beforehand
  • Let someone know where you are going and when you are expected to return
  • Pack a first aid kit
  • Dress for the conditions
