Police warn fraudulent cheque cashing scheme still happening in Lindsay

KAWARTHA LAKES-The city of Kawartha Lakes Police Service is warning residents that a fraudulent cheque cashing scheme is still circulating in our area.

Officials are asking the public to be cautious about the risks associated with depositing cheques into their accounts at the request of a stranger. Over the past week the police service has received reports of suspicious persons approaching people on the street and requesting that they deposit a cheque for them. The suspect may have come into possession of a stolen or fraudulent cheque and will ask an unsuspecting person to deposit and then cash the cheque through their own account by using an automatic teller machine, (ATM). It is typically not until after the cheque is deposited and money turned over to the suspect that the cheque is discovered to be stolen or forged.

If you are approached by a person who you do not know, and are asked to deposit a cheque for them into your bank account, please telephone the City of Kawartha Lakes Police immediately. Think twice before depositing and cashing a cheque for a stranger using an ATM.
