KAWARTHA LAKES-Here we go again. A Severe Thunderstorm Watch issued by Environment Canada has now been upgraded to a Warning.
At 3:28 p.m. Environment Canada meteorologists are tracking a severe thunderstorm capable of producing very strong wind gusts, up to nickel size hail and heavy rain. Areas of strong to severe thunderstorms are moving eastward at 70 km/h. Wind gusts of 90 km/h may be associated with these storms as well as large hail.
These storms will track eastward across southern and central Ontario during the afternoon and early evening hours. The storms will reach portions of our area after 4 PM.
Isolated damaging wind gusts may occur with some of these storms. Small hail, torrential downpours, and frequent lightning may also be associated according to Environment Canada.
Strong wind gusts can toss loose objects, damage weak buildings, break branches off trees and overturn large vehicles. Lightning kills and injures Canadians every year. Remember, when thunder roars, go indoors!
The threat for severe thunderstorms will end in all areas later this evening.
The Office of the Fire Marshal and Emergency Management recommends that you take cover immediately if threatening weather approaches.
