KAWARTHA LAKES-A Lindsay resident has organized a protest against the US Governments recent family separations at the border.
A flyer prepared by Mike Perry, Executive Director of the Kawartha North Family Health Team to promote the protest says:
Help stop this immoral, cruel, and wrong U.S policy that violates international law.
Demand that Prime Minister Trudeau to condemn family separation immigration policy.
Never in Canada? Residential Schools. “60s Scoop”. Forced Adoptions. Internment of Japanese Canadians…
When asked why he organized the protest Perry responded: “Because kids are sacred. Because I am a father. We don’t do this to children. It’s intolerable. It’s about our humanity. It’s not a dry policy issue or about party politics; this is about the government to our south choosing to take kids from their parents. It’s cruel and wrong. And what’s next? We fight injustice.”
Perry has also done work against human trafficking in Canada and abroad.
The US government is separating families who seek asylum in the US by crossing the border illegally.
Dozens of parents are being split from their children every day, the children labeled “unaccompanied minors” and sent to government custody or foster care, while their parents are lsent elsewhere. Vox reports that 1,995 children were separated over the last six weeks, from April 18 to May 31st meaning that an average of 45 children are being taken from their parents each day.
The Protest will be held on SUNDAY 24 JUNE at the office of MP Jamie Schmale,68 McLaughlin Road in Lindsay from 11.45am-12.30pm
