Police in Kawartha Lakes see increase in calls for service

KAWARTHA LAKES-Inmates knocking the head off the sprinklers at the Lindsay Superjail appears to be one if the main reasons calls for service are on the rise in the City of Kawartha Lakes.

Officials at todays Police Board meeting reported calls to City of Kawartha Lakes Police Service are up by about 100 calls per month over the last few months. Chief John Hagarty says the majority of the calls are for minor frauds, theft under $5000 and mischief.

The majority of the mischief calls come from the Central East Correctional Centre according to Hagarty. In 2017, 14 of 27 mischief calls were from CECC versus 3 of 13 in 2016.

“I was quite pleased to find the solution really as to why the mischiefs were as high as they were.” Hagarty remarked. “They were as a result of Central East and that is nothing really we have the ability to influence or control.” Hagarty explained the reason the service tracks statistics is to look for trends they need to be concerned about.

However he can control how those calls effect the stats for the police service. “As you know with assaults, with drugs, criminal charges we had taken out of our stats because if you look at them they were skewed by Central East, but I hadn’t considered taking mischief out of the stats.” Hagarty said.

It would be up to board if they were to take mischief calls at CECC out of the main stats for the police service. There was no move at todays board meeting to make the change.
