KAWARTHA LAKES-A resident of the City of Kawartha Lakes lost more than $9000 this week in a banking scam circulating in our area.
Police say the resident had answered a telephone call from a person who identified himself as “Alex Gills”, a security specialist from a large Canadian bank. The caller said he was investigating a possible fraudulent transaction that had gone through the resident’s account. The resident was asked to log into their bank account and to provide the security number from the back of their credit card. The caller knew the bank and the last 4 digits of the victim’s card number. The caller then asked for money to be transferred. A series of transfers was completed and at the end of the transactions the resident was out over $9000.
Do not provide any personal information to these callers including your account or card numbers.
The Kawartha Lakes OPP is asking residents to hang up on these callers! Do not give them the opportunity to talk to you – they are very convincing according to police.
If you are concerned that any of your banking information has been compromised you contact your bank, in person or by the number provided on the back of your banking cards.
