PETERBOROUGH-Sonya Guthrie received the 2017 Holnbeck Award at Peterborough council for volunteering to help people with disabilities.
Mayor Daryl Bennett presented Sonia Guthrie with the annual Holnbeck award alongside Brian Holnbeck. The award has been given to deserving volunteers since 1989.
Guthrie was chosen for the award for her “caring nature and loving spirit,” announced Bennett.
She volunteers with children in schools as well as adults with special needs. She volunteers at Cephas Church often singing songs, helping with crafts, and also helps people with reading, writing and budgeting as well as simply spending time with them.
Bennett says, “[Guthrie] does not see people with disabilities, she views them as always having abilities.”
Upon collecting her award and posing for a picture with Mayor Bennett and Holnback, Guthrie said she was honoured to be chosen for the award.
“It is a great honour to be here tonight – I love volunteering and helping other people. It brings great joy to my heart,” Guthrie said.
