Old Fashioned barn dance to celebrate 50 years of “The Barn” this Saturday

The owners of Lakeview Arts Barn (LAB)are kicking up their heels and tipping their hat to 50 years in business at the  “The Barn” with an invitation-only event to celebrate their anniversary and Canada’s 150th.

The Barn as it’s known to locals went from being a working cattle barn to a hub-of-the community dance hall, half a century ago. In 1967 Ronald Reagan, an actor and future President of the United States was  inaugurated the new governor of California. Rock royalty,The Doors, released their début album The Doors, Elvis Presley and Priscilla Beaulieu were married in Las Vegas and Nasa launched the Lunar Orbiter 3.

Times have really changed since then and the owners of LAB are asking residents to share their memories and photo’s of events at the barn over the years.

“We know that there are many stories to tell about our Barn – from back when the cows were in residence to dances in the 60s; proms in the 80s; ghost stories; theatrical mishaps; generations of weddings; awesome concerts and shows; and lots of stories of first dates and people falling in love” says a Facebook post.  We want to hear yours! Our archivist will then compile a detailed history & digital memory box of the barn’s 50 years.”

Robynne Jokinnen Pepper shared this memory: March 31, 1984…Robynne Jokinen and Randy Pepper tied the knot. Being the only girl with 4 brothers, my dad knew this would be the only wedding he had any control over how many guests would be invited. Not knowing how to make a dinner list and a dance list, we opted for an evening wedding at Christ Church (Anglican), and proceeded to invite 350 people to the wedding and dance. The Bobcaygeon volunteer fire department manned the bar…And all profits went back to them. Judy Unger-Hornibrook was hired to provide canapé s/ appetiser s while photo’s were being taken. My mom, June Jokinen, and her friends put together a midnight buffet of cold meat, buns, homemade pickles, homemade salads, homemade desserts etc for the guests dining pleasure. It was more of a party than a reception, and we stayed until the last guest left. It was the party of the year and guests were talking about it for a long time after. Happily, my husband and I celebrated our 33rd anniversary in March. Several years later, my youngest brother, Chris had his reception at the Barn as well. Lots of great memories.

There are three local bands lined up for the night: Kikn’, Terri Crawford & the Retro Rockets, and the Harry Peterson Band. They also have a square dance caller so there’s going to be some square dancing as a bit of a throw back to the classic barn dances that used to go on at the barn every Saturday night!
