Virtual classroom in the City of Kawartha Lakes going strong after 20 years

KAWARTHA LAKES-The Virtual Learning Centre (VLC)provided by the Trillium Lakelands District School Board has been offering local students and students from around the world, online learning for 20 years. “As a team, we feel we are innovation leaders in education. We are constantly refining our practices and looking for the best tools available to reach students in an eLearning environment.” said Steven Roffe
District Principal of Learning, eLearning, MiSA and Technology.”Not only is this in the best interests of our students, but it ensures our school is constantly evolving. This makes it a great place to work, too.”

Students in the VLC can take enough courses to graduate with an Ontario Secondary School Diploma.  The VLC is an actual school with timetabled classes and is considered one of the most innovative schools in Ontario according to the board. The school is unique in that there are scheduled live classes available. These classes are recorded for students who cannot attend. Meeting the diverse needs of students – home schooled students, special needs students, athletes, students who are in other countries – the school is able to have a yearbook, a graduation ceremony, and clubs.

An additional layer offered at VLC is Open School Ontario. This captures students who are not able to be successful in traditional or other online programs. Intake is continuous which allows a wide variety of students to start when they wish and work at their own pace. The main focus is on math, science, and English courses. With more than twenty per cent growth over the last five years, elearning is a viable option for many students.

The Virtual Learning Centre has been offering Ontario Secondary School students a wide range of flexible, high school courses since 1997. In 2017 the Virtual Learning Centre had more than 2000 credits issued to students for online courses. Fore more information click here:http://tldsb.ca/schools/virtual-learning-centre/
