Lindsay residents gather to “Take Back the Night”

KAWARTHA LAKES-The statistics are alarming. 1 in 4 North American women will be sexually assaulted during their lifetime. Of every 100 incidents of sexual assault only 6 are reported to police and 1-2% of “date rape” sexual assaults are reported to police.

For years we’ve been teaching young girls not to walk alone at night, to be careful when out at night but the reality is 80% of abuse and sexual violence happens in the home and by someone known by the victim.

Take Back The Night is about stepping up and speaking out about sexual and domestic violence and allowing women to feel safe everywhere and at all times of day or night. It’s an international event with the mission of ending sexual, relationship, and domestic violence in all forms. Hundreds of events are held in over 30 countries annually including one in Lindsay on Thursday night.
